About the product

This is a high-quality reproduction of the "Octopus Grabus" tapestry seen in the 1942 short Matri-Phony. This faithful replica is printed on 100% polyester fabric with hemmed edges for extra durability. The size is as close as possible to that of the original prop, based on careful analysis of frames from the film. It measures approximately 51 inches wide x 60 inches high. (It's pretty big!)

Note: The upper portion of the original prop was never shown onscreen, so I designed this replica with my best guess as to how it may have looked. The banner was clearly made to resemble a Roman vexillum, and if you look closely when watching the film, you can see that it had tassel fringe trim hanging from the lower edge. If you purchase this replica, you may want to mount it on a horizontal crossbar and add some tassel fringe trim on the bottom to make it look even more accurate. Unfortunately, my print provider doesn't offer these options. Your friends will surely be impressed if you do make these modifications, though. And Vernon Dent would be proud.

-

Also: The tapestry comes folded, so you'll need to get the creases out if you want it to look smooth. I used a handheld garment steamer on the sample in the photos you see here. You might be able to iron it, but since it's 100% polyester, you'll need to do it at a low heat setting, and use a pressing cloth between the iron and the fabric. Also, never iron the decorated (front) side, only the back. Too much heat can melt polyester. I'm not responsible for damages if you didn't bother to read this.

I'm a graphic designer who grew up watching the Stooges and Rascals on WFLD Channel 32 in Chicago, and I've created these prop replicas to provide fans with collectible artwork that's closely aligned with the look and vintage style of the actual shorts themselves. All replicas use hand-drawn vector letterforms and colors based on research of vintage letterpress signage and pinback buttons.
